Portrait of a memory, BACKYARD OAK is the artist's recreation of happy summers spent at his aunt and uncle's farm in the hill country of Central Texas. The tree's history, and that of the people who dwelled around it, are eloquently described in such details as a rusting, fire scorched bedstead and a lightning-scar which runs the length of the oak's cleft trunk. Wound through the branches and appearing in the topmost portion of the painting is a hot hanging chain, a true symbol of another place and time. The original painting now hangs in the private collection of Jimmy Dean, while lithographic prints are available in a signed and numbered limited edition of 1000.
